Phoenix

A 850mm x 850mm this is a mixed media composition using plaster of Paris, sand textured gesso, crackling paste, DAS modelling clay and fine pre-mixed fillers to create as multi layered exploration into a what has become a difficult palette for me. The base colours of Crimson red Earth magenta are accented with metallic turquoise orange and gold gilding wax.

The title is appropriate in a number of ways, not only did the colour palette reminded me of the Phoenix, that fantastic mythical bird of flames, being reborn, rising from the ashes. Just like this piece, the canvas has now been re-painted five or six times in an effort to make these colours work.

I’m really happy with the outcome and learnt a lot about colour mixing accents brightness, shadows and knowing and perhaps more importantly when start over and when to stop!!
